Although the servicemen found the food to be acceptable, only half of the MREs delivered were consumed.

The Department of Defense made some changes in hopes to make their rations more acceptable to servicemen. They changed the entree sizes from 5 ounces to 8 ounces. Hot sauce and candies were included. Plus, cold beverages were offered. Unfortunately, the taste was still the same. MREs still taste quite gross. By , commercial-like graphi wer cs e added to MRE packs.

The packs were made easier to open, too. In , the menu was expanded to include 20 entree items. Cheese tortellini and pork chop with noodles were introduced. These days, servicemen can pick from over 24 different entrees. There are also more than supplementary items they can choose from the MRE chain. Each MRE pack has about 1, calories. In one day, they can burn as much as 4, calories. Considering that, it only makes sense for an MRE pack to contain that many calories.

All military MREs come with flameless ration heaters. Each pack comes with instructions on how to add water into the heater and place the food packet inside it.

The instructions are easy to understand, even for ordinary people. Apart from that, most MRE packs come with the following:. Most MRE meals come with a single utensil and an accessory pack. The rice is alright.

It comes with peas, wild rice, white rice, and carrots. If you eat the rice by itself, you may find it a bit dry. However, if you add a bit of sauce, it turns out fine. The cereal bar that comes in an MRE pack tastes like your regular cereal bar.

Crackers taste like the ones you can buy from grocery stores, too. Take note that not all MREs are great. The way they are stored can affect the texture, consistency, and even the flavor of their contents.

Beef Brisket. Maple Sausage. Jalapeno Pepper Jack Beef Patty. Pepperoni Pizza Slice. Chicken Chunks. Lemon Pepper Tuna. It was like an adult lunchable to six-year-old Julia. Little did I know that these packages were filled to the brim with fiber and sodium to keep you full and make you stomach feel like a brick. Now, as a fully grown adult, it's time to taste these again and see which meals really are "edible" and which can stay in the box.

This was the most flavor-less, mushy meal of them all. It was pale and no matter how much salt, pepper, and other seasonings I threw in, it didn't change the flavor; it tasted like canned pea mush unfortunately. I have learned that "sauce" mainly means sugary tomato paste at this point in MRE lingo. The pork looked similar to pork floss, completely shredded, but unfortunately the tomato flavor and brown sugar seasoning is so sickening sweet it's hard to distinguish any other flavor.

You'd think the lemon pepper tuna MRE would rank better than the standard tuna package but the lemon in this one is sugary and candy-like instead of a fresh, zesty lemon flavor. Candied tuna is a pass for us. This would be ranked in my top 5 if I got to rate the Santa Fe style rice and beans that came with this MRE because it tasted like a cheesy burrito, but, unfortunately we are ranking on the main entree here.

The tuna package comes with a tortilla so you can make yourself a wrap. But the big takeaway here is the Maple Muffin Top. This also has the trail mix, crackers and cheddar cheese, and orange beverage powder. And if you are feeling extra brave, throw that extra hot hot sauce on top of the tortellini. Just make sure a port-a-john is on standby.

If you are Italian, you are going to hate this meal, since calling this concoction ravioli is probably a grave sin.
