By assessing children more formally at Reception level with the new Reception Baseline Assessment , the government hopes the children requiring more teacher input will be identified earlier.
In the past, the brightest Year 6 children could be entered for advanced SATs papers called Level 6 papers for English and maths. These tests are no longer offered; instead, all children take the same tests, but the papers include a number of more difficult questions that are intended to stretch higher-achieving children. What are age-related expectations? Age-related expectations: KS1. The primary school National Curriculum in England explained for parents. Some use optional SATs papers for Years 3, 4 and 5 , which can either be internally or externally marked; some set their own end-of-year tests; some rely purely on teacher assessment; some use a combination of these methods.
If your child has just done his KS2 SATs, initially, he will only be given an overall level for example a Level 4 ; sub-levels for example, 4B are then allocated later on once the results have been reviewed nationally, and thresholds set.
When national curriculum levels were being used, the Department for Education suggested that a child should progress two full levels per key stage. Because KS1 covers only two school years, this means that a child should have progressed one level per year for example achieving Level 1B in Year 1, and Level 2B in Year 2.
But as KS2 covers four school years, the expected rate of progress was slower — effectively half a level per year for example, from a 3C at the end of Year 3 to a 3A at the end of Year 4. In addition, there are a number of non-statutory subjects, including Religious Education and Personal, Social and Health Education. For these, the Department for Education published end-of-key-stage statements to help teachers track progress, but levels were not awarded. In theory — but there was always some inconsistency.

However, due to them starting with no English at all and only being 2 points off the expected standard this is still a really good achievement for this child and does show good progress even though there is no official score.
