On the way, stop in Portofino , a colorful fishing village that rivals any town in Cinque Terre for beauty. Enjoy a walk around the village and lunch at a patio table overlooking the sea. There's also the option to expand your Portofino excursion with trips to Milan and Turin, which you can do on this day trip. There will even be time for a boat tour to the village of Rapallo. Perched on a hill above this coastal village is Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro , a Marian church and famous pilgrimage site that was built in and which features an incredible marble facade.
Also here is the historic Castello di Rapallo , a defensive fortress dating to the 16th century. After Portofino you can continue a few minutes further up the coast to Genoa, where you'll overnight. Day five you'll discover Genoa on a three-hour tour. This ancient seaport metropolis was for centuries a hub of global trade, which turned Genoa into a superpower during the Middle Ages. You can see much evidence of this legacy in its well-preserved historic center. On the tour, you'll walk the labyrinthine streets of La Superba and pass historic churches like the Romanesque Church of San Donato and the Gothic Sant'Agostino , which was built in You'll also stroll the famous Piazza De Ferrari , a grand plaza where you'll find the famous Teatro Carlo Felice , the city's opera house, which was inaugurated in The tour continues through the historic streets, visiting areas like the old harbor and stopping at public parks like Villa Durazzo Pallavicin i, a green space and botanical garden done in the English-romantic style.
Speaking of which, there's no better way to cap your Genoa excursion than with a visit to Parchi di Nervi. This acre 9-hectare park and gardens complex sits on a coastal cliff and abounds with Mediterranean flora and tropical plants. Walking the pebbled pathways you'll see cedars and pines sitting next to colorful oleander bushes, squat olive trees, and various palms. Come later and you can watch the sunset over the ocean. Day 3 can be ideally split between a leisurely beach morning in Monterosso followed, of course, by an afternoon exploring Porto Venere.
You could round out the trip by heading back to Monterosso for an evening meal, enjoying the local specialty of seafood and particularly anchovies.
Spending this long in the Cinque Terre will allow you to really explore each and every one of these charming traditional villages. For a four day stay, I would recommend spending the first day enjoying the hike between all the villages , then choosing your two favorite villages to explore on days 2 and 3.
Spend the fourth morning enjoying the famous beach at Monterosso get there early to beat the crowds! A longer stay also means you can incorporate a full beach day without missing out on exploring! Cinque Terre is a stunning destination, well deserving of a longer stay so it can be properly appreciated and explored — but if you need to squeeze your visit into a shorter timespan, you can definitely see the best of the villages in just a day or two.
Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. What to See in Cinque Terre? Manarola Cinque terre. Cinque Terre Coast Line. Before I start, I am assuming that you are visiting Cinque Terre for the same reasons I did: to hike, to swim, and to see insanely beautiful towns. I am also assuming you prefer not spending precious time souvenir shopping in cliche souvenir shops. If those two assumptions describe you, then two days is the perfect amount of time to spend in Cinque Terre.
Make sure you have your two-day Cinque Terre Trail pass , and start the morning in Levanto. Three hours?! But instantly upon reaching the top, all doubts subsided about whether the hike was worth it. I did five hikes during my four days in the area, and this was the best. Once in Monterosso, eat! Then, explore the only flat town of the Cinque Terre. Swim for a bit if you fancy, and then, time to hit the trails again.
Reward yourself with insanely affordable gelato from Gelateria Vernazza and a swim. Stick around all evening, have dinner in Vernazza, and enjoy sunset there, too. Start in Vernazza, and hit the trail to Corniglia. This trail is quoted as two hours, just like Monterosso to Vernazza, but I finished in 1. Once in Corniglia, explore. It was probably my favorite Italian meal I had during my trip! Normally, the Cinque Terre paid trail would continue along the sea, but the portion from Corniglia to Manarola to Riomaggiore is closed.
This free trail you can do instead is much more difficult but much more rewarding. It took me about 2. But after that, it was definitely the most enjoyable hike from my trip. Afterwards, go for a swim.
