How to Know If Your Thermocouple Is Malfunctioning Like the other component parts in your furnace, the thermocouple can wear down over time, producing lower voltage than it should when heated.
How Does a Thermocouple Work? Step 1: Inspect the thermocouple What does a thermocouple look like and how do you find it? Some thermocouples will look slightly different, so check your furnace manual.
Failed Thermocouple Symptoms Once you have located the thermocouple, do a visual inspection. The first is signs of contamination on the tube , which can include discoloration, cracks, or pinholes. Tony It would be unusual to get a batch of bad thermocouples such that you have to keep replacing them because of an inherent defect in the thermocouple itself. Not unless they were all made by the same company in the same batch.
When I have run into this recurrent thermocouple problem before it has usually been traced to a problem at one of the two ends of the thermocouple. One end, at the pilot, needs to be located exactly properly, mounted and placed in the flame of the pilot light. The other problem at the other end of the thermocouple is more subtle.
You can think that you have fully screwed in the connector that pushes the end of the thermocouple into the bottom of the gas valve but it may not actually be fully seated. That could be mistaken for a thermocouple failure, as poor contact can get intermittent or poor thermocouple performance.
It's also possible that the gas control valve itself is damaged or its thermocouple connector threads cross threaded or damaged so that you can't get a good thermocouple connection. That is a less common problem in my experience. Lastly, it's possible that the defect is in a gas flow or clog problem in the pilot light itself. I have had to replace my thermocoupler 3 times in 4 years the last one only lasted 3 months can you recommend a brand name and why is this continuing to happen My gas boiler is 35 years old and in good condition The boiler is a Hydrotherm.
That's not an explanation that i understand. After all, the thermocouple is in a flame. Try replacing it and be sure the new one is properly placed.
Thermocouples are pretty much a generic replacement item. Just check the length of the tubing needed. It's better not to have a lot more to me than you need just for Simplicity. Watch out if you don't know how to make these connections you could make your system unsafe.
On - by mod - What type of thermocouple use for mini flare? Bernie Apologies but while Thermocouples are quite standard in their threads and fittings across gas appliances, I don't know what product is referred to by "mini flare" Perhaps you could attach product details and a photo?
I'm not aware of any thermocouple on gas appliances that use a flare fitting. On - by mod - pilot light is on but the main burner dosent light? Common causes for the refusal of a gas burner to light when the pilot is on include a bad gas valve or most likely a defective thermocouple or thermocouple connection. Check the thermocouple connection at the gas valve Watch out: also check for lack of combustion air - your heater may include an oxygen sensor that shuts down the system if there is insufficient combustion air - as that risks fatal CO poisoning or poisoning from lack of oxygen in the room.
Replaced the thermocouple on my elderly Williams dual wall heater a couple of years ago. Lately it has started acting up. I don't have any trouble lighting the pilot. The flame is blue and looks a nice size. Then the heater works cycling on and off as you would expect. At some point, the burner goes off and the pilot light is also out and I have to light it again. Sometimes this takes 30 minutes, sometime several hours. I have used canned air to clean and pushed and pulled everything.
